Health Care Interpreter Instructor Training (HCIIT) - Spring Institute 2004
April 12 – 16, 2004
Oakland, California

The HCIIT-Spring Institute 2004 is offering a seminar to prepare college instructors to successfully develop and conduct a health care interpreter training program at the college-level. The program is conducted by Kaiser Permanente’s National Linguistic and Cultural Programs for their partnering educational institutions and Kaiser Permanente Regions. Successful implementation of health care interpreter training programs will require a strong partnership between colleges and health care agencies with committed instructors and language coaches who are skilled health care interpreting teachers.

Purpose
The seminar consists of 40-hours of interactive learning, providing an overview of the core competencies required of a health care interpreter, as well as program implementation strategies. The aim is to provide the skills and technical assistance necessary to teach health care interpreting. Participants will not only learn the Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program (HCICP) Curriculum, but also receive instructor’s tools and templates necessary to provide a solid foundation for course instruction. The seminar will include the pedagogy underlying the courses such as curriculum design, classroom management, and error correction.

Learning Objectives
1. Understand the need for trained healthcare interpreters and their role in providing linguistic and cultural services to the LEP population.
2. Understand program content so that they can effectively facilitate learning of the content by the students.
3. Understand and implement program curriculum including program design, tools and templates.
4. Understand possible challenges in implementing the Health Care Interpreter Certificate Training Program (classroom management, error correction, etc.)

HCIIT-Spring Institute 2004 participants will receive pre-work and additional information after completed registration.

Who may attend?
The workshop is reserved for college instructors and faculty members who plan to teach the Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program (HCICP). Candidate instructors should have instructional competencies and be familiar with teaching about diversity. Also, a background in health care and interpreting is advantageous. Administrators are welcome to participate on the last day of the program, April 16, 2004, to learn about health care interpreting and how these programs can be effectively structured. However, prior registration is required.

Faculty Bio
Gayle Tang, MSN, RN, Director of National Linguistic & Cultural Programs, is a diversity champion and leader in the improvement of cultural and linguistic access throughout Kaiser Permanente and the community. Ms. Tang has led multiple local and national strategic initiatives and created service delivery systems that have supported the provision of culturally and linguistically competent care to patients and their diverse communities. Concerned about the dearth of trained health care interpreters and related patient safety issues, Ms. Tang developed and continues to teach a Health Care Interpreter Certificate Program with the goal of developing a cadre of linguistically and culturally competent healthcare interpreters. This Community College Partnership Program is in its 7th year and has been successfully replicated in California. Now, a national initiative in “Building Community Health Care Interpreter Capacity” is underway with Ms. Tang’s leadership.

Ms. Tang continues to dedicate much of her time to promoting cultural and linguistic awareness between patients, health care professionals and the community through education and training, presentations, and consultations. She is also the Principal Investigator of several research projects assessing the quality of language access services, entitled “Building Language Access Through Data Standards and Tools,” a comprehensive research agenda funded by The California Endowment.
